This series focuses on “James,” a New Testament letter written by a man named James, who was Jesus’ half-brother and key leader in the early church. This letter is a treasury of gospel-inspired wisdom for how to live in the complexities and difficulties of life.
A Study of 1 John | There are so many things in this life that fight for our attention and pull us into patterns of living that can bring harm and disconnection with those around us. The Bible tells us that God is light, and “in him is no darkness at all.” It is so easy to lose sight of what is important. The darkness of life’s troubles can cause us to lose track of the truth. But learning to live in truth and love in our life and relationships can help us walk out of the darkness and into the light of God.
Who do you want to become? The very best parts of ourselves are rarely developed alone, in isolation, or on an island. The people who are most important to us support and encourage us throughout our life, and we become strong. People truly CAN change, and God uses the relationships in our lives to make us grow. We ARE better together!
For every great step in life, there is often a legitimate fear standing in the way because we live in a world that is full of dangers. One of the most common commands found in the Bible is “Do not be afraid.” As humans, we were born to be brave, to step out and make a difference in the world. God wants us to be brave. What if being brave was far less about what we can accomplish and a whole lot more about trusting our next step to a God who is able to do all things?
When something of value is lost or missing, we do all we can to find it. We aren’t satisfied until we find what is missing. Jesus tells us that God feels the same way about lost people. In Luke 15, we see a picture of a God and a love for those who have lost their way, a God who will give his ALL to find, rescue, and restore the ONE who is lost.
We are all runners. But, why? Why do we run? Sometimes we are called to do the “right thing,” but when we weigh the cost, the price just seems too high. So, we run from God. The question is, “where IS God when I run from what’s good?” God is so full of mercy that it seems “too good to be true.” The story of Jonah shows us that when we stop running from God, mercy is right there when we turn around.
In life, we all experience many victories and failures. But, in the end, it isn’t our talents or skills that qualify us. It is our willingness to be teachable and humble when we fall. The life of King David shows how a seemingly insignificant and flawed person can live a worthy life. People look to outward appearances, but God looks to the heart.
We all want to live the good life. Each of us is seeking deep happiness—fulfillment and satisfaction. Jesus shows us a way of living that turns our priorities upside down. True fulfillment comes when we put last things first.
